PS: In case anyone is wondering (I know, I just thought you might be...) the lovely landscape picture at the top of the home page is of the North Hampshire Downs near Combe. It's close to where I grew up and I love the area for its remoteness and quiet, even though it's only 60 miles from London.
On about the spot where the picture was taken, gaunt on the crest of the hill, stands an ancient gibbet where an adulterous local couple were allegedly hanged in the 17th Century for murdering the woman's husband by drowning him in a nearby dew pond. That Black Legend was also the subject of the director John Schlesinger's first film in 1948, which he made with some Oxford undergraduate chums and local villagers.
Some say there are intimations of his later work in Far From the Madding Crowd and it's certainly suitably Hardy-esque...but that's another story.
All for now - thanks for reading!
